The purpose of this page is to list genealogic puzzles which I have found or which have been posed to me. I will add more puzzles as time permits. Help on these questions would be appreciated.
Derricks appear at Lympsham, a small village in the lowlands of Someset in 1792, when three children are baptized to George and Mary. His first son, who also lived at Lympsham was a tailor, while his second son became a baker at Weston-super-Mare. I have not found any child born ca. 1756 named George who would fit with this person. Anyone with any clues?
In 1752, the Keynsham PR starts to list baptisms to Thomas and Hannah Derrick. Thomas was probably a smith, since later records show that probably descendants were smiths at Keynsham. Derricks were heavily involved in the setting up of a Baptist church at Keynsham. Descendants of this family moved to the US, and were early Mormon pioneers. The only Derrick baptisms at Keynsham prior to 1752 are baptisms in the late 1600s, and do not mention a Thomas. Any ideas where he came from?
The Wells, Somerset lists the marriage of a Samuel, victualler, of Nailsea, to Jane Bennett, spinster, of Chelvey, in 1727. I suspect some children were baptized to them, but have found no evidence of baptismal records, nor do I have any idea who his parents may have been. Help?
The 1851 census lists a farmer named John Derrick living at Whitchurch. Previously there is evidence that he had lived at Publow and Tickenham. The census record says that he was born at East Harptree, but there is no record of him in the PR. There is a very likely connection with a family at East Harptree, but again no baptismal record of a John. Help on this is needed?
