ADAPT WV receives funding

On June 18, 1999 the Appalachian Community Development Fund awarded a grant of 4,800 to ADAPT of West Virginia. ADAPT WV is a grassroots a cross-disability civil rights organization, working for the civil rights and equality of West Virginians with disabilities. Over the past two years ADAPT WV has been involved in a number of issues. Our primary mission is to ensure that individuals are given the choice of getting the necessary services in their own homes rather than being forced into nursing homes and institutions. ADAPT WV took action which resulted in Medicaid Waiver Hearings in the summer of 98. We drafted a resolution which was passed by the West Virginia Legislature in support of MiCassa, A national personal assistance bill which would allow for a consumer directed framework throughout the country. ADAPT WV was also instrumental in the passage of the Ron Yost Personal Assistance Bill H.B. 2438.

Another primary focus of ADAPT is equal access. Over the past two years our victories include: a ramp at Citizens Bank in Morgantown, a lift which allows wheelchair users to enter La Casa Restaurant and increasing accessible parking on the West Virginia University Campus.

The grant funds provided by Appalachian Community Development Fund will allow us to embrace our grassroots organizing efforts training will be held at three sites this year these trainings will provide other individuals with the knowledge and skills to effectively fight for their rights. ADAPT will also be present at a number of conferences throughout the state this year. Future projects will include Medicaid Reform, working for equal access in our local communities as well as accessible affordable housing.
