There seems to be a discrepancy in Williams birth date.  According to a study of the Blackwood family by Edwin Neale Blackwood Sr.  great-grandson of  William Albert Balckwood, William was born on Oct 4,  1804.  His source of information came from a family bible kept by (William’s) daughter Mary Blackwood White or by her daughter Emma White. Phyllis Winthurst, of Tucson, Arizona offers a different date based upon an entry in the Shenandoah County, VA Court Minute Book (1816-1821). The date of the court session was 9 Mar 1818 and the reference is found in the fourth entry for that particular court session: 'Ord'd. that same persons [Overseers of the Poor] bind William Blackwood son of Barbara Sansberry to John Brown to learn the art trade & business of a Tanner acccg to Law, he being thirteen years old on the 25th day of May last.' Based upon the evidence offered by the court record, William's birth date is assumed to be 25 May 1804. The following was taken from the family notes of Edwin Neale Blackwood, Sr, p. 16: 'A farmer and stonemason, reared on, and later owner of a farm near the  small town of Browntown, now in Warren County, Virginia. His wife died when he was 49 years old and he decided to sell out, dispose of his few slaves, and move west and join his wife's brother, Alexander McCleary, at Howell's Mill, Cabell County. He intended to seek work on the proposed lock and dam construction on Guyan and Mud Rivers, and to give his children the better advantage of the Cabell County area. He was drowned on a Sunday afternoon in Mud River, said to have been on a walk, and to have come upon a youth in trouble in a deep hole in the river, became entangled in tree roots when attempting rescue. Buried in same church lot with his brother-in-law.
