Health Occupations
Two year program for grades 11, 12 & adults. This area of study will provide the student with an understanding of the allied health field as it applies to medical assistant, medical secretary, medical insurance clerk, ward clerk and physical therapy assistant. Grades 11 & 12 complete the course in two years, adults have the option of completing the program in one year. ARTICULATION CREDITS WITH FAIRMONT STATE COLLEGE
INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH CARE* A required course for entry, skilled and professional levels in the three career major areas (Diagnostic, Informational, and Therapeutic). Courses included are: health care systems, careers in health care, principles of disease transmission and prevention, basic human needs/human growth, basic nutrition, basic medical terminology, first aide & CPR, mathematics for health careers, computer applications for health care systems and career related student organizations. (One period class) (Grades 11, 12 & Adult)
BASIC CONCEPTS OF HEALTH CARE* A required course for entry, skilled and professional levels in two of the three career major areas (Diagnostic & Therapeutic). Courses included are: personal qualities needed for success in the health professions, consumer rights and responsibilities, communication skills for health care, advanced medical terminology, legal responsibilities in the health care setting, medical ethics, computer applications in basic health care concepts, career related student organizations. (One period class) (Grades 11, 12 & Adult)
CLINICAL CONCEPTS* A required course for entry level of diagnostic and therapeutic services. Courses included are: safe work practices, principles of body mechanics, body systems in health and disease, measurement and assessment, basic microbiology in disease transmission/prevention/OHSA Standards, principles of sterile technique, orientation to specialized occupational areas, computer applications in clinical concepts. (Prerequisites- Introduction to Health Care & Basic Concepts of Health Care) (One period class) (Grades 11, 12 & Adult)
*Introduction to Health Care, Basic Concepts of Health Care & Clinical Concepts may be taken concurrently.
APPLIED CLINICAL CONCEPTS (Work-based three period block) This course of study provides students with entry-level knowledge and skills needed to function in a variety of health care settings. Students are required to choose a specialized occupational area for in-depth classroom study and must complete correlated (work-based) clinical experience as part of the course. This is a required course for entry level in all three major career areas. It is recommended course for the skilled level in Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services. (Prerequisites- Introduction to Health Care, Basic Concepts of Health Care & Clinical Concepts) (Grades 12 & Adult)
CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT The nursing assistant course prepares individuals to give basic supervised nursing care to clients. The areas of emphasis include understanding and applying basic nursing concepts and clinical skills as it relates to a variety of health care settings. The nursing assistant program is designed for the person who wants a rewarding career in the health care field.
This course includes classroom study,
laboratory application, and clinical experiences. Topics include:
ethics and legal issues, communication skills, customer relations, psychological
needs, social needs, infection control, safety, activity and rest, hygiene
and grooming, nutrition, elimination, vital signs, emergency care, special
needs, and special procedures. Students in the program will have
exposure to/in various clinical settings. Employment opportunities
for completers of the program are excellent!
Course Length:
Option I: One Semester Class
- Good for individuals that want to get in and get out. Class prepares
students for the state CNA test. Employment is anywhere that hires
CN,--hospitals, nursing homes, home health, group homes, private duty and
clinics. Open to adults only. (3 period class)
Option II: Two Semester Class
- Good for individuals that are interested in developing a career track
in health care (LPN, RN or other health related area) or are interested
in seeking employment in the above mentioned areas. One is eligible
for the state CNA test after completing the course Open to grade
12 & adults. (3 period class)
