In 1914 the Board of Education decided that a high school should be established in Monongah. N.G. Matthews was employed as the principal and was the only teacher that year.

The school met in one room of the Thoburn Grade School with nineteen pupils enrolled.

In the fall of 1915 Mr. Matthews was employed as principal with Miss Elizabeth Davis as his assistant.  The school occupied the two rooms over H.D. Martin’s store and the enrollment jumped to 35.

In the fall of 1921, the school was started in the building that is now the Monongah Middle School. It was the West Monongah High School and enrollment was 100.

The first graduating class from Monongah High School was in 1918. During the years additions were added to the High School. Monongah was known for their academics, sports, bands and many other activities. Many of the students have gone out into world and served in many occupations. The school was always staffed with fine teachers and principals.  The community supported the school at all their events.

In the fall of 1961 the Marion County Board of Education decided to establish a Monongah Junior High School for grades 7 - 8.  Charles Smith was the principal.
Grades 1 - 6 from East Monongah and Thoburn were sent to the Thoburn School.

In 1973 while Charles Moore was principal, the Monongah Junior High School was destroyed by fire.  The students were then sent to the Monongah High School where they attended school in the afternoon with the high school students attending class in the mornings.

A new addition was added to the Monongah High School to house the 7th and 8th grade and Monongah High became a 6 year school until the fall of 1979 when it consolidated into North Marion and the Monongah Middle School grades 5 -8 was established with Dennis Cottrill as principal.

From 1981 - 89 Ronald Wood was principal. James Pulice has served as principal from the fall of 89 to present.  The present faculty staff numbers 33 and the enrollment is 300.
