MONONGAH MIDDLE SCHOOL - FAIRMONT GENERAL HOSPITAL
A WINNING PARTNERSHIP !!!
Established in 1991,  Monongah Middle School and Fairmont General Hospital  have been Partners in Education.  Since that time, both have worked hard for school improvement and student development. Here is a summary of the partnership:
          Multiphasic Program: Annual multi-phasic exam for community of Monongah each year.  The students serve a pancake breakfast in conjunction with the testing.   Results from blood testing monitor all major organs of the body and enable participants to become aware of health problems at an early detection stage. Participants average about 90 people each year and this fund raiser has generated approximately  $10,000 for the school .
        Awards:
  •    Received the "Exemplary Business Partnership Award" as one of two middle schools selected by the WV Education Fund
  •   One of six WV schools to receive the "Gold Star Award" for

  • Exemplary School-Business Partnership from the WV Education Alliance 
    Health Fairs:

  • Career awareness:
  •  8th grade students came to FGH for job shadowing;  format changed to school site in 1998. 

  • Mini-grants: Initiated  by Fairmont General Hospital and funded through the  FGH Foundation: 
  • -$500 in grants for upgrading computer lab 
  • -$1000 for purchase of Gateway Computer for  Internet Access:
  • $900 awarded for three mini-grants; approx. $250 in library texts were presented* 
  •   A  $2000 Education Alliance Grant obtained; matched by $2,000 from FGH for health promotion/hand washing program.   A web site launched for promotion of hand washing in schools has gained two Internet Awards and over 3000 students in the US have accessed this site for the classroom experiments.    At MMS, a school wide hand washing campaign was implemented as part of the program. 
  •  $300 grant for school web site development; two teachers funded for mini-grants ($375 total)  Approx. $150 in additional texts/reference books presented to MMS Library

    Student Recognition: “Principal’s Recognition Program” initiated in 1992;  8-12 students per month visit FGH for tours and lunch;  certificates and small gift presented to students in recognition of achievement.
